Big Blue Bus, a leading Bus Line in the United States, has received extensive awards such as the American Public Transportation Association's Outstanding Achievement Award in 2000, the Number One Urban Transit System in 1998, the Tranny Award for providing services to the disabled community in 1998, the American Public Transportation Association's Outstanding Safety Award in 1998 and many more. Big Blue Bus needed an informative website to deliver frequently updated news, notices, maps and extensive information. Since it is the most visited website among City of Santa Monica hosted websites, the Big Blue Bus needed a user-friendly navigation system, which would help visitors find information with the least amount of clicks while maintaining a fast loading site for targeted users of the general public (bus riders). The bus line needed a well-designed site, which reflects the organization's identity.
Challenges:
- Navigate each bus route information section including Line Maps, Stop Locations, Line Schedules, and Destinations with the least amount of clicks.
- Design a self-maintained site allowing a Big Blue Bus administrator to post frequently updated news and notices without having any programming experience.
- Design a website incorporating the strong organization's identity.
- Find a balance of strong web design with a fast loading and functional site.
Solutions:
- Unique bus route sub-navigation design allows the user to navigate to each bus route. Information of Line Maps, Stop Locations, Line Schedules, and Destinations are easily found using just one click.
- Develop a database-driven website allowing the Big Blue Bus administrator to post frequently updated news and notices through our custom designed admin tool. This allows the client to update the site without needing any programming experience.
- Use Big Blue Bus's unique sky blue color as a main design theme throughout the site; incorporate clear and strong design elements to reinforce the Big Blue Bus brand.
- To optimize the loading speed the site combines the colors of blue, black, and yellow, which are all HTML browser safe colors. The selective use of optimized graphics emphasizes the importance of the navigation.
